Sport - Paul Collingwood column

Steve Harmison, my county team-mate at Durham, came back from his shin trouble against Ireland and showed what international cricket was all about when he hit his straps.

He will admit he took some time to settle but when someone is bowling at 90mph from that height it is for anybody to deal with and he picks up key wickets.

I thought Sajid Mahmood bowled really well and used his brain well. It’s good to know when you need wickets you can turn to people like those two.

Sri Lanka showed in the Test series they are a side, and the way they adapted to difficult conditions and dug in showed the toughness of their .

In the one-day game they have batsmen who can take the game away from you in Sanath Jayasuirya, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan.

if conditions are right we can bring the big, tall bowlers on, be aggressive and take wickets.

We were disappointed with the way the Test series went and we want to have a good one-day series and get the confidence going again.

Sport - People’s choice

The of Dunga as Brazil’s new coach signifies a change in direction for the world’s most successful footballing nation.

As Carlos Alberto Parreira and his academic approach make way, in comes a man who angrily stomped his way through three World Cups as a midfield enforcer.

Even more than his ability to anchor the midfield, it was his fists clenched, strength of leadership that made him stand out and it is this capacity which has proved decisive in his surprise elevation to his new position.

At 42, with no previous coaching experience, Dunga’s appointment is proof that nothing dates like the recent past.

After their World Cup failure Brazil have opted for a radical change of style with Parreira consigned to history.

As Brazil struggled to turn on the magic in Germany their home public became increasingly impatient with Parreira’s low profile personality. To many he came across as a blase, passive figure, sitting on the touchline with his arms folded.

They wanted Luiz Felipe Scolari, giving his own private show on the edge of the pitch, kicking every ball and transmitting passion to his players.

But Scolari was unavailable, so the Brazilian FA have turned to the next best thing - a high profile ex-player who stands for the same kind of values.

Like Scolari, Dunga is from the Rio Grande do Sul in the south of the giant country. People from this state - known as Gauchos - are the Yorkshiremen of Brazil, plain speaking, no-nonsense believers in the virtues of hard work.

A few days before his appointment Dunga confessed that he ‘would have similarities with Big Phil Scolari, since we both place a high value on playing collectively, and on forming a united and motivated group’.

From his point of view, Parreira’s team in the World Cup ‘lacked a bit of collective spirit. When the group is solid, individual talent tips the balance. But when there is no collectiveness, then individualism goes down the drain together with the group’.

There is an element of playing to the gallery in Dunga’s appointment. The Brazilian FA have protected themselves by giving the people what they want.

But a clear headed analysis of Brazil’s current situation would conclude that an injection of passion will not be sufficient. There are other areas which need to be re-examined.

New Brazil coach Dunga

Dunga lifted the World Cup as Brazil captain in 1994

Brazil have had a wonderful run of success, but the model that produced it is starting to look a little tired and predictable.

For example, Brazil have been using the forward bursts of the full-backs not as elements of surprise, but as a systematic part of their attacking play.

Increasingly their opponents have learned to block their runs and attack the space they leave behind them.

The tactic has also altered the balance of the central midfielders’ tasks; now they cover the full-backs’ advances whereas previously they took more for setting moves in motion.

Brazil certainly suffered in Germany from a lack of imaginative passing in the midfield. These, then, are serious tactical problems for a novice coach to face.

Dunga will have to deal with them, rebuild an ageing side and still win - a tall order for the most experienced of coaches.

He is ready and willing to pick up the burden of one of football’s most demanding jobs.

Will he prove able? That remains to be seen.

Sport - Jonathan Agnew column

One particular low point came here, at The Oval, where England’s bowling in a one-day match against Sri Lanka was not merely grotesque, but also unprofessional and unworthy of an international team.

Although there is still the possibility of that nightmare recurring in the one-day series against Pakistan, England’s Test team appear to have refocused and sharpened up their act.

It needed to.

The sight of Brett Lee cutting a cake to mark the start of the 100-day countdown to the first Test in Brisbane might have been an reminder of what lies ahead, but it was a strong indication of just how fired up the Australians will be.

Andrew Strauss could not resist looking ahead either, but he would not be drawn on his thoughts of the captaincy in Australia.

That is something the selectors need to resolve quickly before it becomes an unnecessary distraction.

The departure of both openers left the coach Bob Woolmer unsure, when asked, of how many players he still has under his command on the tour

Having appeared to appoint Andrew Flintoff for the Ashes, it would be interesting to know what has happened since even minutely to sway their judgment - apart from England winning two Tests, that is.

The captain needs full and unequivocal support, and the apparent wavering will not be sending positive signals in direction as he works hard to recover from his foot operation.

Pakistan’s squad is in danger of becoming chaotically disorganised.

The departure of both openers, Salman Butt and Taufeeq Umar left the coach Bob Woolmer unsure, when asked, of how many players he still has under his command on the tour.

The manner in which his team nose-dived to defeat at Headingley must also be of concern to him.

There is little option but for them to employ the fourth opening combination of the series - Imran Farhat and Mohammad Hafeez - while England appear set to field an unchanged team.

This would give Sajid Mahmood the chance to show that his confidence has blossomed following his burst on the final afternoon at Headingley.

Sport - Vaughan’s advice for Ashes captain

While England fans debate the Flintoff/Strauss captaincy issue ahead of the Ashes squad announcement, the man they are vying to replace believes either will do a good job.

A persistent knee injury ended Michael Vaughan’s hopes of defending the famous urn and recapturing his sensational form from the 2002/3 series down under, when he amassed 633 runs at an average of 63.30.

He refuses to be drawn on which Andrew he thinks should lead England, but he does have plenty of advice to offer his temporary successor.

“For me a lot of the captaincy is done in and around the dressing room, how you relay your messages and what mental attitude you send your team out with because they will follow the captain’s lead,” Vaughan told BBC Sport.

“If you set them with a great positive mental attitude then you’ve got a chance.

“I don’t know how the players have reacted in the dressing room, but judging by the success they (Flintoff and Strauss) have had, they are both decent at what they do.”

Strauss, the public Durham University graduate nicknamed Lord Brocket by Matthew Hoggard, is perfect son-in-law material - intelligent, yet very popular among his peers.

When you have the respect of your team, they know when to and when not to speak

Michael Vaughan

Flintoff is the brash, hero with the charisma to match his inspirational, whole-hearted style.

But despite their polarities, both men have shown a flair for leadership.

Flintoff’s finest hour in charge was England’s series-levelling win over India in Mumbai in March, a victory made the more memorable as the tourists were without five key players from the 2005 Ashes series.

Meanwhile, Strauss’ faith in Monty Panesar saw the left-armer spinning England to a comprehensive - albeit controversial - 3-0 series victory over Pakistan this summer.

“Both players are great characters and both have the personality to be good captains for the future,” said Vaughan.

“For me, they would not have been given the captaincy if they were not good enough for the job.

“I don’t think it matters what you do, it’s more the personality and person you are. Be yourself and do it your way.”

Flintoff and Strauss have already shown they can inspire and motivate, two key responsibilities for every captain.

Andrew Flintoff lifts Andrew Strauss after a wicket in India

Which Andrew will come out on top on 12 September?

“When you have the respect of your team, they know when to and when not to speak,” said Vaughan.

“They have got to get used to the way you react in different situations. All this happens once the team know your traits and your personality.”

Vaughan’s three-year tenure as captain has coincided with England’s Test renaissance, a revival which has taken them to second in the world rankings.

And he has no qualms about divulging more of the captaincy skills collected since replacing Nasser Hussain in 2003.

“I stand at mid-off for the reason that I’m the ear and the person the bowler can turn to with ideas,” said Vaughan. “I also have a great opportunity to move the field without anyone noticing.

“That’s part of the tactics of being a captain - not being seen.”

Easy as that? Perhaps not - but let’s hope Messrs Flintoff and Strauss are listening.

Sport - Akmal thanks Gilchrist for upturn

wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal credits Adam Gilchrist with helping him overcome poor form.

Akmal, whose place was under after he struggled in England and in the Champions Trophy, hit a blistering 78 against West Indies on Monday.

“I spoke to Gilchrist in India and he gave me some useful tips,” said Akmal.

“I learnt things from him and have worked hard with coach Bob Woolmer to improve. It felt good to get some runs - it has helped me regain confidence.”

Akmal’s 121-ball innings, in a seventh-wicket stand worth 148 with Mohammad Yousuf, put Pakistan in complete control of the first Test on day three.

Twenty-four-year-old Akmal ended the 12-year reign of Pakistani keepers Rashid Latif and Moin Khan when he made his debut in 2002 but only cemented his place in the side in 2004.

He has scored 1,331 runs in 28 Tests but passed 20 just once during the recent Test series in England.

“It was my first tour to England and the pitches seamed a bit. I found it hard to adjust as keeper and batsman,” he admitted.

And some information of .

News - Poor maths ‘fails’ sale shoppers

Millions of shoppers will fail to bag winter sale bargains as they lack basic maths skills, the government says.

Ministers want people who find it hard to work out “20% off” or “buy one, get the second ” offers to sign up for free refresher maths courses.

Staff from its Get On campaign will be out among the crowds at 10 city centres across England with tips.

The Department for Education and Skills says 14.9m people lack numeracy skills expected of an 11 child.

The Get On campaign staff will be handing out percentage calculators and shoppers to test to see if they could improve their skills.

“We all use numbers every day, but millions struggle to do the kind of basic sums that are so to our lives at work and at home,” said Skills Minister Phil Hope.

“Everyone enjoys the hunt for a bargain, but people might not realise that they can brush up their maths or reading and writing - locally, and for free.”

Shops across the country are gearing up for one of the busiest days of the year, with some opening up in the early hours of the morning.

But many chains and department stores already began their sales a day ahead of the traditional 27 December start date.

Here George Derbyshire, chief executive of the National of Enterprise Agencies, looks at ways in which a services business can best attract new clients.

QUESTION

Jeff

We started our new company six months ago providing career coaching, training and redundancy support.

We have been phoning our contacts and generally networking. We are also about to send out a monthly providing hints, tips and limited free advice.

Ask George Derbyshire a question

So far things are slow. What else should we be doing to increase business levels?

ANSWER

George Derbyshire, chief executive of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies

I suspect yours is one of those products which need to be sold, rather than one where the clients are banging on your door to buy.

So you need to be selling the benefits of your service strongly.

Your newsletter sounds a good idea, especially if you can include some case studies demonstrating the difference you can make to individuals.

Have you tried running free taster seminars to help get the word out?

Local business organisations - such as Chambers of Commerce, Rotaries, Institute of Directors branches, for example, are always looking for interesting speakers to add to their event programmes.

And at the risk of teaching to suck eggs, are your sales techniques up to date?

Lots of people make calls and spend time networking, but are you making the most of your ?

News - Inside Tokyo’s hostess clubs

A woman working as a hostess in a Japanese bar has to concentrate on just one task, keeping the customer happy.

Happy customers stay longer. They drink more of the bars’ expensive drinks.

That means more commissions for the hostess and more profits for the bar.

There are thousands of hostess bars in Tokyo. Club Lounge Monina is one of the more respectable .

Paid to entertain

The foreign women working there told me they were not prostitutes but entertainers - but they were not keen to give their real names for fear of what their friends and families back home might think of them.

‘Karen’, who is from the Philippines, said: “Our job is just to talk to people who come in to drink, to sing along with them on the karaoke machine, to make them laugh and to try to listen to them.”

Lucie Blackman

Lucie Blackman was killed while working as a hostess

She works five nights a week from Monday to Friday at the club. She says she earns 2,500 yen (10) an hour.

But that is just the beginning. Hostess bars have systems of rewards and bonuses.

“We get tips as well as the commissions for the drinks and if we invite customers to the bar we get money for that too,” said Karen.

Hostesses can also go on dinner dates with customers, known as dohan. They get their dinner paid for and then bring the customer to the club.

The night we were at Club Lounge Monina one of the customers was giving out gifts to a couple of the women he was sitting with.

The women who work there insisted they did not offer any sexual services to the customers.

Maybe some girls work as prostitutes, I don’t know what goes on in other places, but not here
‘Vivienne’

‘Vivienne’, who is from Brazil, said she was worried before she started but she said: “I was so tired of working in a convenience store. I thought to myself, I will give it a try. That was two-and-a-half years ago. I’m still here, I think it is OK.

“Maybe some girls work as prostitutes, I don’t know what goes on in other places, but not here.”

The bar we visited is owned and run by Monina.

At 34, she is unusually young to be a hostess boss or mama-san.

“The best hostesses are good looking for sure, but then it also depends on how they attract customers. It’s not easy if you’re not smart,” she said.

Stricter controls

Currently most of the women she employs are from Asia.

“I used to have many girls, from Cameroon, Senegal, Europeans, Americans, every country but the become much stricter and also the economy’s not so good. Before it was easier to give higher wages, but now it’s not,” she said.

The authorities do seem to be tightening up the immigration rules. In the past many women worked in the districts illegally on tourist visas.

That is not so easy these days.

The immigration department says it has introduced more rigorous checks on young women arriving from certain countries where they suspect significant numbers of illegal workers are coming from.

Since 2005 new measures to combat human have also been introduced.

Responsibility

Monina said there was only so much a mama-san can do to ensure the safety of the girls who work for her.

“It’s really the girl’s responsibility. There are certain rules that you teach the girls, how to tell who is a good, who is a bad customer for instance, but you cannot control what they do out of hours. After the club closes it’s up to them to decide how far they want to go with the customer,” she said.

Hostess bars are part of the mainstream of Japanese culture. Business deals are done there and clients entertained. Wives know they are part of life for “salarymen”.

Mama-san Monina

After the club closes it’s up to them to decide how far they want to go with the customer
Monina

But when you sit there and watch the young women cuddling up to the older customers, or so drunk they can barely keep standing to finish their song on the karaoke machine, you wonder whether it really is that innocent.

Of course there are establishments far more sleazy than the one we visited.

As Japanese journalist Kentaro Katayama points out, if a salaryman is looking for sex a hostess club is not necessarily the best place to find it.

He said: “If you really want to have sex with somebody it’s much easier to go to a prostitute.

“Going to a hostess club would cost you more than meeting a prostitute in Tokyo. It is very expensive, and yet still people like to go.”
